L’événement (Al-Waqi’a)
1
Quand l’événement (le Jugement) arrivera,
2
nul ne traitera sa venue de mensonge.
3
19
qui ne leur provoquera ni maux de tête ni étourdissement ;
20
et des fruits de leur choix,
21
et toute chair d’oiseau qu’ils désireront.
22
23
pareilles à des perles en coquille
24
en récompense pour ce qu’ils faisaient.
25
Ils n’y entendront ni futilité ni blasphème ;
26
mais seulement les propos : « Salâm ! Salâm ! »... [Paix ! Paix !]
27
77
Et c’est certainement un Coran noble,
78
dans un Livre bien gardé
79
que seuls les purifiés touchent ;
80

Sourate LVI.
L’Échéante.
(Al-Wâqi‛a.)

        10
        et les Précesseurs. Les Précesseurs,
Note [édition originale] : as-Sâbiqûna « les Précesseurs ».

                44
                [43] ni fraîche, ni bienfaisante.
                45
                [44] Ils étaient, avant cela, plongés dans le luxe ;
                46
                [45] ils persistaient dans le Grand Péché ;
                47
                [46] ils disaient :
                47

                51
                Oui, en vérité, ô Égarés ! [ô] Négateurs !
                52
                vous mangerez aux arbres Zaqqûm ;
                53
                vous vous en emplirez le ventre ;
                54
vous boirez par-dessus, de l’[eau] bouillante

                55
et vous boirez comme chameaux altérés.
                56
Voilà leur partage au Jour du Jugement.
Note [édition originale] : nuzulu-hum « leur partage ».

                        96

                        11
those are they brought nigh the Throne,
                        12
                        in the Gardens of Delight
                        13
                        (a throng of the ancients

                        16
reclining upon them, set face to face,
                        17
immortal youths going round about them
                        18
with goblets, and ewers, and a cup from a spring
                        19
                        (no brows throbbing, no intoxication)
                        20
and such fruits as they shall choose,
                        21
and such flesh of fowl as they desire,
                        22
                        and wide-eyed houris
                        23
as the likeness of hidden pearls,
                        24
a recompense for that they laboured.
                        25
Therein they shall hear no idle talk, no cause of sin,
                        26
                        only the saying 'Peace, Peace!'
                        27
The Companions of the Right (O Companions of the Right!)
                        28
                        mid thornless lote-trees
                        29
                        and serried acacias,
                        30
                        and spreading shade
                        31
                        and outpoured waters,
                        32
                        and fruits abounding
                        33
                        unfailing, unforbidden,
                        34
                        and upraised couches.
                        35
                        Perfectly We formed them, perfect,
                        36
and We made them spotless virgins,
                        37
                        chastely amorous,
                        38
like of age for the Companions of the Right.
                        39
                        A throng of the ancients
                        40
and a throng of the later folk.
                        41
The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!)
                        42
mid burning winds and boiling waters
                        43
and the shadow of a smoking blaze
                        44
                        neither cool, neither goodly;
                        45
and before that they lived at ease,
                        46
and persisted in the Great Sin,
                        47
ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up?
                        48
What, and our fathers, the ancients?'
                        49
Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk
                        50
shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day.
                        51
Then you erring ones, you that cried lies,
                        52
you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum,
                        53
and you shall fill therewith your bellies
                        54
and drink on top of that boiling water
                        55
lapping it down like thirsty camels.'
                        56
This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom.
                        57
We created you; therefore why will you not believe?
                        58
Have you considered the seed you spill?
                        59
Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators?
                        60
                        We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped;
                        61
that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not.
                        62
You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember?
                        63
Have you considered the soil you till?
                        64
Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers?
                        65
Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting --
                        66
                        'We are debt-loaded;
                        67
                        nay, we have been robbed!'
                        68
Have you considered the water you drink?
                        69
Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it?
                        70
Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful?
                        71
Have you considered the fire you kindle?
                        72
Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it?
                        73
We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers.
                        74
Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty.
                        75
No! I swear by the fallings of the stars
                        76
(and that is indeed a mighty oath, did you but know it)
                        77
it is surely a noble Koran
                        78
                        in a hidden Book
                        79
none but the purified shall touch,
                        80
a sending down from the Lord of all Being.
                        81
What, do you hold this discourse in disdain,
                        82
and do you make it your living to cry lies?
                        83
Why, but when the soul leaps to the throat of the dying
                        84
and that hour you are watching
                        85
(And We are nigher him than you, but you do not see Us)
                        86
why, if you are not at Our disposal,
                        87
do you not bring back his soul, if you speak truly?
                        88
Then, if he be of those brought nigh the Throne,
                        89
                        there shall be repose and ease, and a Garden of Delight;
                        90
and if he be a Companion of the Right:
                        91
'Peace be upon thee, Companion of the Right!'
                        92
But if he be of them that cried lies, and went astray,
                        93
there shall be a hospitality of boiling water
                        94
                        and the roasting in Hell.
                        95
Surely this is the truth of certainty.
                        96
Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty.

                        The Event
                        1
                        When the event befalleth -
                        2
There is no denying that it will befall -
                        3
                        Abasing (some), exalting (others);
                        4
When the earth is shaken with a shock"
                        5
And the hills are ground to powder"
                        6
So that they become a scattered dust,
                        7
And ye will be three kinds:
                        8
(First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?
                        9
And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand?
                        10
And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race:
                        11
Those are they who will be brought nigh"
                        12
                        In gardens of delight;
                        13
A multitude of those of old"
                        14
And a few of those of later time.
                        15
                        On lined couches,
                        16
                        Reclining therein face to face.
                        17
There wait on them immortal youths"
                        18
With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring"
                        19
Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness,
                        20
                        And fruit that they prefer"
                        21
And flesh of fowls that they desire.
                        22
And (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes,
                        23
                        Like unto hidden pearls,
                        24
Reward for what they used to do.
                        25
There hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination"
                        26
(Naught) but the saying: Peace, (and again) Peace.
                        27
And those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?
                        28
                        Among thornless lote-trees"
                        29
                        And clustered plantains,
                        30
                        And spreading shade,
                        31
                        And water gushing,
                        32
                        And fruit in plenty"
                        33
Neither out of reach nor yet forbidden,
                        34
                        And raised couches;
                        35
Lo! We have created them a (new) creation"
                        36
                        And made them virgins,
                        37
                        Lovers, friends,
                        38
                        For those on the right hand;
                        39
A multitude of those of old"
                        40
And a multitude of those of later time.
                        41
And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand?
                        42
In scorching wind and scalding water"
                        43
                        And shadow of black smoke,
                        44
                        Neither cool nor refreshing.
                        45
Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury"
                        46
And used to persist in the awful sin.
                        47
And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again,
                        48
                        And also our forefathers?
                        49
Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time"
                        50
Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day.
                        51
Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers,
                        52
Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum"
                        53
                        And will fill your bellies therewith;
                        54
And thereon ye will drink of boiling water,
                        55
Drinking even as the camel drinketh.
                        56
This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment.
                        57
We created you. Will ye then admit the truth?
                        58
Have ye seen that which ye emit?
                        59
Do ye create it or are We the Creator?
                        60
We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun,
                        61
That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not.
                        62
And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect?
                        63
Have ye seen that which ye cultivate?
                        64
Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer?
                        65
If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim:
                        66
Lo! we are laden with debt!
                        67
                        Nay, but we are deprived!
                        68
Have ye observed the water which ye drink?
                        69
Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder?
                        70
If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks?
                        71
                        Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out;
                        72
Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower?
                        73
We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness.
                        74
Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.
                        75
Nay, I swear by the places of the stars -
                        76
And lo! that verily is a tremendous oath, if ye but knew -
                        77
That (this) is indeed a noble Qur'an"
                        78
                        In a Book kept hidden"
                        79
Which none toucheth save the purified,
                        80
A revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.
                        81
Is it this Statement that ye scorn,
                        82
And make denial thereof your livelihood?
                        83
Why, then, when (the soul) cometh up to the throat (of the dying)
                        84
And ye are at that moment looking"
                        85
                        - And We are nearer unto him than ye are, but ye see not -
                        86
Why then, if ye are not in bondage (unto Us),
                        87
Do ye not force it back, if ye are truthful?
                        88
Thus if he is of those brought nigh,
                        89
Then breath of life, and plenty, and a Garden of delight.
                        90
And if he is of those on the right hand,
                        91
Then (the greeting) "Peace be unto thee" from those on the right hand.
                        92
But if he is of the rejecters, the erring,
                        93
Then the welcome will be boiling water"
                        94
                        And roasting at hell-fire.
                        95
                        Lo! this is certain truth.
                        96
Therefor (O Muhammad) praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.

Intitled, The Inevitable; revealed at Mecca.
In the name of the most merciful God.

Note [édition originale] : The inevitable;] The original word, the force whereof cannot well be expressed by a single one in English, signifies a calamitous accident, which falls surely and with sudden violence, and is therefore made use of here to design the day of judgment.
day of judgment shall suddenly come,
                          2
no soul shall charge the prediction of its coming with falsehood:
                          3
it will abase some, and exalt others.

Note [édition originale] : And those who have preceded others in the faith shall precede them to paradise;] Either the first converts to Mohammedism, or the prophets, who were the respective leaders of their people, or any persons who have been eminent examples of piety and virtue, may be here intended. The original words literally rendered are, The leaders, the leaders: which repetition, as some suppose, was designed to express the dignity of these persons and the certainty of their future glory and happiness2.

Note [édition originale] : There shall be many of the former religions, and many of the latter;] Father Marracci thinks this to be a manifest contradiction to what is said above, There shall be many of the former and few of the latter: but al Beidâwi obviates such an objection, by observing that the preceding passage speaks of the leaders only, and those who have preceded others in faith and good works; and the passage before us speaks of the righteous of inferior merit and degree; so that tho’ there be many of both sorts, yet there may be few of one sort, comparatively speaking, in respect to the other.

                                              77
Quòd hic est sanè Coranus venerandus.
                                              78
                                              79.   Scriptus in libro Custodito :

                                              80.  Non tangent illum nisi purificati.
                                              80
                                              81.  Demissio ( idest demissus ) à Domino Sæculorum.
                                              81
                                              82.  An ergo hanc narrationem (idest hunc librum Alcorani ) vos eritis vilipendentes ?
                                              82
                                              83
Nonne, porrò cùm pervenerunt animæ morientium ad guttura.
                                              84
                                              84.  Et vos tunc aspicitis eum, qui moritur.
                                              85
                                              85.  Et nos viciniores sumus illi, quàm vos ; sed non videtis nos.
                                              86
                                              86.  Nonne, inquam, si estis sine mercede remansuri ;
                                              87
                                              87.  Reduceretis eam (idest animam ) à gutture in corpus, si estis veraces ?
                                              88
                                              88.  Porrò sive ille, qui moritur , fuerit ex approximandis Deo  :

                                              89.  Erit sanè illi requies, & alimentum optimum, & hortus deliciarum.
                                              90
                                              90.  Sive fuerit ex sociis dexteræ.
                                              91
                                              91.   Dicetur illi  : Pax tibi à sociis dexteræ.
                                              92
                                              92.  Si autem fuerit ex abnegatoribus, errantibus.
                                              93
                                              93.  Hospitium ejus erit ex aqua ferventi.
                                              94
                                              94.  Et conjectio (idest conjicietur ) ad ustulandum in Infernum.
                                              95
                                              95.  Profectò hæc est sanè veritas certitudinis.
                                              96
                                              96.  Lauda ergo nomen Domini tui Magni.

XXXI.  Inter lotos. ] De his arboribus suprà dixi.
XXXII.  Mauz. ] Arabicè hæc arbor vocatur موز , Mauz, & طلح Talah.
XXXIX.  Et fecimus eas Virgines. ] Gelal : كلما اتاهنّ ازواجهنّ وجدوهنّ عذارى Quotiescumque accedent coituri ad eas mariti earum, invenient eas Virgines. Et addit eas futuras من غير ولادة لا وجع , sine partu prolis, & sine sensu doloris, nimirùm, quem experiuntur Virgines in coitu. Eadem habet Zamchas.
XLI.
LXIV.  Ne substituamus similes vobis, & iterùm producamus vos in id, quod nescitis. ] Pro امثالكم similes vobis, explicat Gelal : مكانكم loco vestri. Eos verò, quos substituturum se minatur Deus, putat esse من الصور كالقردة والخنازير figuras Simiarum, & porcorum, & hujusmodi. In quo videtur tribuere Alcorano opinionem transmigrationis Pythagoricæ, nempè transitus animarum humanarum in bruta animalia, vel in alia corpora.
LXXIV.
Frigida omnia, & insulsa.
                                                Note [édition originale] : REFUTATIONES.
II.
III.
IV. Ex eo, quòd habetur hìc versu 64. & expositione sapientum Moslemorum, patet manifestè, Mahumetum credidisse μετεμψύχωσιν, nempè animarum transmigrationem, qua anima unius hominis non solùm in aliud corpus humanum transit : sed etiam in brutorum corpora transfertur. 1. pag. Idem argumentum fieri poterit Mahumetanis, dùm asserunt, animam Phinees filii Eleazari transisse in Eliam, & ex Elia in Alchedrum, seu Sanctum Georgium.
