Qui éparpillent (Ad-Dariyat)
1
Par les vents qui éparpillent !
2
Par les porteurs de fardeaux !
3
Par les glisseurs agiles !
4
Par les distributeurs selon un commandement !
5
17
ils dormaient peu, la nuit,
18
et aux dernières heures de la nuit ils imploraient le pardon [d’Allah] ;
19
20
Il y a sur terre des preuves pour ceux qui croient avec certitude ;
21
ainsi qu’en vous-mêmes. N’observez-vous donc pas ?
22
30
Ils dirent : « Ainsi a dit ton Seigneur.
37
Et Nous y laissâmes un signe pour ceux qui redoutent le douloureux châtiment ;
38
50
« Fuyez donc vers Allah.

1
Par celles qui vont, rapides,
Note [original edition] : aḏ-ḏâriyâti « celles qui vont ».
      9
dont est détourné qui a été détourné !
      10
      Périssent les gens à conjectures
      11
qui, dans [leur] ignorance, se complaisent aveuglément !
Note [original edition] : ġamratin « leur ignorance ». Text. : une masse, un abîme.
        12

          27
Il le leur présenta et dit : « Ne mangerez-vous point ? ».
Note [original edition] : Ne mangerez-vous point ? Pour le sens v. sourate XI, 73.
            28
Note [original edition] : mina l-Muslimîna « de Soumis à Dieu ».

              and perverted therefrom are some.
              10
              Perish the conjecturers
              11
              who are dazed in perplexity
              12
asking, 'When shall be the Day of Doom?'
              13
Upon the day when they shall be tried at the Fire:
              14
'Taste your trial! This is that you were seeking to hasten.'
              15
Surely the godfearing shall be among gardens and fountains
              16
taking whatsoever their Lord has given them; they were good-doers before that.
              17
Little of the night would they slumber,
              18
              and in the mornings they would ask for forgiveness;
              19
and the beggar and the outcast had a share in their wealth.
              20
              In the earth are signs for those having sure faith;
              21
and in your selves; what, do you not see?
              22
And in heaven is your provision, and that you are promised.
              23
So by the Lord of heaven and earth, it is as surely true as that you have speech.
              24
Hast thou received the story of the honoured guests of Abraham?
              25
When they entered unto him, saying 'Peace!' he said 'Peace! You are a people unknown to me.'
              26
Then he turned to his household and brought a fattened calf,
              27
and he laid it before them saying, 'Will you not eat?'
              28
Then he conceived a fear of them. They said, 'Be not afraid!' And they gave him good tidings of a cunning boy.
              29
Then came forward his wife, clamouring, and she smote her face, and said, 'An old woman, barren!'
              30
They said, 'So says thy Lord; He is the All-wise, the All-knowing.'
              31
Said he, 'And what is your business, envoys?'
              32
They said, 'We have been sent to a people of sinners,
              33
to loose upon them stones of clay
              34
marked with thy Lord for the prodigal.
              35
So We brought forth such believers as were in it,
              36
but We found not therein except one house of those that have surrendered themselves.
              37
And therein We left a sign to those who fear the painful chastisement.
              38
And also in Moses, when We sent him unto Pharaoh, with a clear authority,
              39
but he turned his back, with his court, saying, 'A sorcerer, or a man possessed!'
              40
So We seized him and his hosts, and We cast them into the sea, and he blameworthy.
              41
And also in Ad, when We loosed against them the withering wind
              42
that left nothing it came upon, but made it as stuff decayed.
              43
And also in Thamood, when it was said to them, 'Take your enjoyment for a while!'
              44
Then they turned in disdain from the commandment of their Lord, and the thunderbolt took them and they themselves beholding
              45
and they were not able to stand upright, and were not helped.
              46
And the people of Noah before; surely they were an ungodly people.
              47
And heaven -- We built it with might, and We extend it wide.
              48
And the earth -- We spread it forth; O excellent Smoothers!
              49
And of everything created We two kinds; haply you will remember.
              50
Therefore flee unto God! I am a clear warner from Him to you.
              51
And set not up with God another god; I am a clear warner from Him to you.
              52
Even so not a Messenger came to those before them but they said, 'A sorcerer, or a man possessed!'
              53
What, have they bequeathed it one to another? Nay, but they are an insolent people.
              54
So turn thou from them; thou wilt not be reproached.
              55
And remind; the Reminder profits the believers.
              56
I have not created jinn and mankind except to serve Me.
              57
I desire of them no provision, neither do I desire that they should feed Me.
              58
Surely God is the All-provider, the Possessor of Strength, the Ever-Sure.
              59
The evildoers shall have their portion, like the portion of their fellows; so let them not hasten Me!
              60
So woe to the unbelievers, for that day of theirs that they are promised.

              The Winnowing Winds
              1
By those that winnow with a winnowing"
              2
And those that bear the burden (of the rain)
              3
And those that glide with ease (upon the sea)
              4
And those who distribute (blessings) by command,
              5
Lo! that wherewith ye are threatened is indeed true,
              6
And lo! the judgment will indeed befall.
              7
By the heaven full of paths,
              8
Lo! ye, forsooth, are of various opinion (concerning the truth).
              9
He is made to turn away from it who is (himself) averse.
              10
              Accursed be the conjecturers"
              11
Who are careless in an abyss!
              12
They ask: When is the Day of Judgment?
              13
(It is) the day when they will be tormented at the Fire,
              14
(And it will be said unto them): Taste your torment (which ye inflicted). This is what ye sought to hasten.
              15
Lo! those who keep from evil will dwell amid gardens and watersprings,
              16
              Taking that which their Lord giveth them; for lo! aforetime they were doers of good;
              17
They used to sleep but little of the night,
              18
And ere the dawning of each day would seek forgiveness,
              19
And in their wealth the beggar and the outcast had due share.
              20
And in the earth are portents for those whose faith is sure.
              21
And (also) in yourselves. Can ye then not see?
              22
              And in the heaven is your providence and that which ye are promised;
              23
And by the Lord of the heavens and the earth, it is the truth, even as (it is true) that ye speak.
              24
Hath the story of Abraham's honoured guests reached thee (O Muhammad)?
              25
When they came in unto him and said: Peace! he answered, Peace! (and thought): Folk unknown (to me).
              26
              Then he went apart unto his housefolk so that they brought a fatted calf;
              27
And he set it before them, saying: Will ye not eat?
              28
Then he conceived a fear of them. They said: Fear not! and gave him tidings of (the birth of) a wise son.
              29
Then his wife came forward, making moan, and smote her face, and cried: A barren old woman!
              30
They said: Even so saith thy Lord. Lo! He is the Wise, the Knower.
              31
(Abraham) said: And (afterward) what is your errand, O ye sent (from Allah)?
              32
They said: Lo! we are sent unto a guilty folk,
              33
That we may send upon them stones of clay,
              34
Marked by thy Lord for (the destruction of) the wanton.
              35
Then we brought forth such believers as were there.
              36
But We found there but one house of those surrendered (to Allah).
              37
And We left behind therein a portent for those who fear a painful doom.
              38
And in Moses (too, there is a portent) when We sent him unto Pharaoh with clear warrant,
              39
But he withdrew (confiding) in his might, and said: A wizard or a madman.
              40
So We seized him and his hosts and flung them in the sea, for he was reprobate.
              41
And in (the tribe of) A'ad (there is a portent) when we sent the fatal wind against them.
              42
It spared naught that it reached, but made it (all) as dust.
              43
And in (the tribe of) Thamud (there is a portent) when it was told them: Take your ease awhile.
              44
              But they rebelled against their Lord's decree, and so the thunderbolt overtook them even while they gazed;
              45
And they were unable to rise up, nor could they help themselves.
              46
And the folk of Noah aforetime. Lo! they were licentious folk.
              47
We have built the heaven with might, and We it is Who make the vast extent (thereof).
              48
And the earth have We laid out, how gracious is the Spreader (thereof)!
              49
And all things We have created by pairs, that haply ye may reflect.
              50
Therefor flee unto Allah; lo! I am a plain warner unto you from him.
              51
And set not any other god along with Allah; lo! I am a plain warner unto you from Him.
              52
Even so there came no messenger unto those before them but they said: A wizard or a madman!
              53
Have they handed down (the saying) as an heirloom one unto another? Nay, but they are froward folk.
              54
So withdraw from them (O Muhammad), for thou art in no wise blameworthy,
              55
And warn, for warning profiteth believers.
              56
I created the jinn and humankind only that they might worship Me.
              57
I seek no livelihood from them, nor do I ask that they should feed Me.
              58
Lo! Allah! He it is that giveth livelihood, the Lord of unbreakable might.
              59
And lo! for those who (now) do wrong there is an evil day like unto the evil day (which came for) their likes (of old); so let them not ask Me to hasten on (that day).
              60
And woe unto those who disbelieve, from (that) their day which they are promised.

                                          40
                                          40.  Itaque sustulimus eum, & exercitus ejus, & projicimus eos in mare, & ipse erat reus.
                                          41
                                          44
                                          44.   Illi verò superbè transgressi sunt præceptum Domini sui : quamobrem sustulit eos clamor Gabrielis è Cœlo  : & ipsi viderunt (idest perierunt tempore diurno ).
                                          45
                                          45.  Neque potuerunt stare : neque fuerunt sese defendentes.
                                          46
                                          46.  Et gentem Noe anteà perdideramus  : quippe ipsi erant homines prævaricantes.
                                          47
                                          48
                                          48.  Et Terram substravimus illi  : & euge complanantes (idest sapientissimè illam in modum lectuli complanavimus ).
                                          49
                                          53
                                          53.  An ex testamento successivè reliquerunt sibi hoc ? Atqui ipsi sunt homines exorbitantes (idest Meccani superant eos in impietate ).
                                          54
                                          54.  Recede ergo ab eis : neque ideò tu eris culpabilis, cùm jam satis commonueris eos.
                                          55
                                          58
                                          58.  Quippe Deus est Altor, habens virtutem firmam.
                                          59
                                          59.  Porrò illis, qui iniquè egerint, dabitur portio pœnæ, sicut portio sociorum suorum ( idest similium ipsis in impietate ) neque expetent accelerari eam, sicut modò expetunt id irrisoriè.
                                          60
                                          Note [original edition] : NOTÆ.
Inscribitur Sura à prima illius dictione : & conveniunt communiter Authores esse Meccanam, & versibus sexaginta constare.
                                          I.  Per spargentes sparsionem.
] Arabicè قُتل exponit Gelal : لُعن maledicti sunt. Puto accipiendum, more Arabico, imperativè, seu per modum imprecationis, Occidantur, vel maledicantur.
XXIII. ] Explicat Jahias : هذا القران لحق  : Hic Alcoranus est sanè veritas.
                                            Note [original edition] : REFUTATIONES.
113. & sequentibus disseruimus.
II. Illas strias, seu semitas illis similes, quas in arenis, vel aquis ventus efformat, gratis omninò, & absque ullo fundamento in Cœlis Mahumetus confingit. At enim, ne errarent in cursu, striis illis eguerunt. Mirùm quin Deus singulis syderibus etiam anteambulonem addiderit, cùm oculis careant, & cæco modo per Cęlum vagentur.
III.
                                            V. In historia hospitum Abrahæ, duo præcipuè peccat Alcoranus. 18. Quo audito, Sara risit post ostium tabernaculi occultè dicens : Postquàm consenui, & Dominus meus vetulus est, voluptati operam dabo  ? Ubi hìc vociferationes illę Alcorani ? Ubi percussio faciei ? Figmenta hæc sunt, & deliria Mahumeti ; quemadmodùm lapides illi, seu lateres signati nomine eorum, super quos in Sodomis erant projiciendi.
