Sourate CX.

CHAP. CX.
Intitled, Assistance; revealed at Mecca.
In the name of the most merciful God.
1
WHEN the assistance of God shall come, and the victory
a
Note [édition originale] : When the assistance of God shall come, and the victory;] i.e. When God shall cause thee to prevail over thy enemies, and thou shalt take the city of Mecca.

and thou shalt see the people enter into the religion of God by troops
    b
Note [édition originale] : And thou shalt see the people enter into the religion of God by troops;] Which happened in the ninth year of the Hejra, when, Mohammed having made himself master of Mecca, and obliged the Koreish to submit to him, the rest of the Arabs came in to him in great numbers, and professed Islam 1.

celebrate the praise of thy Lord, and ask pardon of him
    c
Note [édition originale] : Celebrate the praise of thy Lord, &c.] Most of the commentators agree this chapter to have been revealed before the taking of Mecca, and suppose it gave Mohammed warning of his death; for they say that when he read it al Abbâs wept, and being asked by the prophet what was the reason of his weeping, answered, Because it biddeth thee to prepare for death; to which Mohammed replied, It is as thou sayest 2. And hence, adds Jallalo’ddin, after the revelation of this chapter the prophet was more frequent in praising and asking pardon of God, because he thereby knew that his end approached; for Mecca was taken in the eighth year of the Hejra, and he died in the beginning of the 10th.3

    SURA CX.
    AUXILIUM.
    MEDINENSIS :
    COMMATUM TRIUM.
    1
    1.  Cum venerit auxilium Dei, & victoria.
    2
    2.  Et videris homines, dùm ingredienter in religionem Dei turmatim.
    3
    Note [édition originale] : NOTÆ.
Communis epigraphe est النصر , Auxilium. Aliqui inscribunt الفتح , Victoria, confundentes cum Sura 48. Alii اذا حاء, Cùm venerit.
    I.  Victoria. ] Conveniunt plerique, quantum vidi, esse hìc promissionem victoriæ Mahumeti contra Meccanos, ob quam plures timore perterriti, superstitionem illius inviti amplexi sunt.
III.  Celebra laudem. وكان فتح مكة في رمضان سنة ثمان وتوفي ص في ربيع الاول سنة عشر Erat Mahumetus post revelationem hujus Suræ frequentior in laudando Deum : & petebat veniam ab eo, convertebatque se ad eum. Nam Mecca expugnata fuit anno octavo Hegiræ in Mense Romadan : ipse verò occubuit in Menso primo Verno Anni decimi.
      Note [édition originale] : REFUTATIONES.
      I. Fingit hìc Mahumetus, revelatum fuisse sibi à Deo, quòd nulla indigebat revelatione.
II. Duplici ex capite Mahumeti apparet impietas. Primò, quia in Mense Romadan, jejunio, pietati, ac pœnitentiæ à se destinato, & in quo, vel contra hostes arma ferre nefas erat, patriam, & concives suos proditorium in morem bello injustissimo oppressit, causa prorsùs frivola emendicata, quòd Coraisitæ contribules sui fœdus secum initum infregissent.
